2. Keith Dies In The First Act - Barbarian
One of Barbarian's biggest twists can be attributed to sly casting. By hiring Bill Skarsgard, the man known for playing Pennywise in It and It Chapter Two, audiences automatically are on-guard upon seeing him on screen.
Playing Keith Toshko, the character occupies the Air BNB that protagonist Tess Marshall is supposed to stay at. With his try-hard advances and the suspicious circumstances, the film does its best to establish the character as a potential threat. It doesn't help that when the two discover a basement, Keith decides to go investigate on his own, a big horror movie no-no, in what looks like a trap to lure Tess in.
His innocence is then proven when the woman finds him injured, absolving him of any suspicion. The bad news, however, is that the deformed creature named The Mother arrives and kills Keith by repeatedly bashing his head in.
By casting a horror movie icon like Bill Skarsgard, the filmmakers of Barbarian use that to their advantage in order to make viewers wary of him throughout the entirety of his screen time.
