10 Insane Theories That Improve Bad Movies

4. The Merovingian Is A Previous 'One' In The Matrix Reloaded

We were all underwhelmed by The Matrix sequels, but they have given birth to some mightily interesting theories indeed, one of the most enticing of which is that the Merovingian (Lambert Wilson) is actually one of the previous "Ones" that the Architect informs Neo about. There are several question-marks alluding to this; the word "Merovingian" refers most prominently to the Merovingian Dynasty, which is believed by many to have assumed the bloodline of Christ, and given how Neo becomes a giant Jesus allegory in the latter two films, it's not hard to draw the dots. Add to this that Persephone says at one stage to Neo, "He was like you once", presumably referring to him as a One rather than simply accepting the notion of choice, and it seems strange that this was never pursued in The Matrix Revolutions (which we'll get to in a minute). Still, perhaps the Wachowskis preferred ambiguity above all else.
