3. Alien 3 Is A Dream While Ripley Is In Hyper-Sleep
I like to pretend that no Alien films were made after James Cameron's masterful Aliens; Alien 3 was such a dramatic misfire - owing largely to Fox, who wouldn't just let first-time feature filmmaker David Fincher get on and make the film - that despite some swanky effects (for the time), it's a regrettable blemish on a franchise which, at this point, has more negligible entries than good ones. But disgruntled fans came up with a theory to delude themselves into taking it a little less seriously; what if the events of Alien 3 never happened, and actually are just a dream of Ripley's while she's in hyper-sleep? The return of the repressed, a fear of loss, death and so on are themes that are constantly explored in our dreams, so it sort of makes sense. Plus, we don't want to think that Newt and Hicks are actually dead. But this theory sort of crashed and burned once Alien: Resurrection was made, unless we think of it as Part 2 of her nightmarish dream, or just a crappy bit of fan fiction.
