The Venom symbiote entered into the Marvel Universe in a rather benign way, when Spider-Man found it on an alien world during the Secret Wars event. It worked out well for him, seeing as his costume was in tatters, but after a while, the true nature of the "costume" became clear.

With the help of Reed Richards, Spidey was able to extricate himself from the symbiote, but it would manage to escape and find a kindred spirit in Eddie Brock. Both the symbiote and Brock had their own reasons to hate Peter, and together, they became Venom.

When Venom made his presence known to Parker, the fight became personal very fast. Spidey attempted to use a sonic cannon to remove the symbiote, but his plan doesn't work out, and Venom takes him to the same belltower Pete used to remove the symbiote permanently in Web of Spider-Man #1.

Spider-Man frees himself, and the clanging of the bells end up weakening Venom, who used a ton of webbing to secure Spidey. Figuring that using so much webbing must have also weakened Venom, Spider-Man uses this to his advantage, and forces Venom to use more.

Eventually, this proves too much, and Brock is depowered as the symbiote dripping off of him, leaving him to fall to the ground below. In the end, he's as powerless as any human, and left inside a containment unit with the Fantastic Four for study.
