The original: Tim Burton's second film is probably where the master of gothic and nepotism peaked. The bonkers supernatural comedy starring Michael Keaton as the ghostly guru who gives advice to the recently-deceased Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, with Winona Ryder as the angsty teen whose moved into the deceased's house, is a bonafide classic. Hilarious, inventive, slightly upsetting, and with a pretty rocking soundtrack. The sequel: Kevin Smith was probably right on the money when, having been offered the chance to write a sequel to the movie, he opined Didn't we say everything we needed to with the first Beetlejuice? The original was a surprise hit, which of course meant Warner Bros were eager to replicate it. An animated series popped up on TV soon after, but the big money apparently awaited in Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Burton actually pitched the idea because he thought it would be so ridiculous they'd turn him down and he could go onto other things. Instead they loved it, and put it into development. It never got further than that.
