10 Insane Ways Movies Got Sabotaged

4. Kevin Spacey's Abuse Scandal Mirrored The Movie's Plot Too Much - Gore

In 2017, a biopic of legendary writer Gore Vidal was in the works, with Kevin Spacey set to star in the lead role. The project actually got as far as being filmed, but in October 2017 the project was torpedoed by the sexual misconduct allegations levelled against the actor.

In addition to firing Spacey from his hit political drama House of Cards, distributor Netflix decided to shelve Gore indefinitely.

Roughly a year later, the biopic's script leaked online and revealed that the film was to feature sequences in which Vidal would attempt to seduce a younger man.

As such, it's easy to see why Netflix erred on the side of caution and opted not to release the film at all, rather than dump it on their platform with minimal advertising and maybe a disclaimer about Spacey.

Given that another Spacey-starring project, Billionaire Boys Club, still received a limited release the year after the allegations surfaced, it's possible that Gore still might've seen the light of day if the script didn't parallel reality quite so explicitly.

But ultimately, the end product would simply seem too "real" for most, and given Netflix's immediate dismissal of Spacey from House of Cards, they clearly didn't have much interest in offering a platform to a credibly accused abuser.
