10 Insanely Hyped Movies That Flopped HARD

8. Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo Thumbs Down

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away a Star Wars movie underperforming at the box office was simply unheard of, but that was before Han attempted to fly solo.

Many reasons have been cited for Solo: A Star Wars Story's underperformance, from franchise fatigue to the apparent audience boycott that spun out of the fan backlash to The Last Jedi. The truth of the matter is that it was a combination of factors.

Reviews were generally complementary, though not sparkling, and seemingly not positive enough to counter fanbase toxicity and a poorly-timed release. Solo arrived in theatres just one week after the mega-successful Deadpool 2 and while Marvel's $2 billion-surpassing Avengers: Infinity War was still going strong.

Whatever your opinion on Solo: A Star Wars story, there's no escaping the fact it was a disaster for Disney and the franchise, costing around $400 million to make and market, and making just under that figure in global box office takings.
