It's no secret that there are dozens if not hundreds of crackpot theories surrounding Stanley Kubrick's iconic horror masterpiece The Shining, as so brilliantly explored in the documentary Room 237.

But a few years ago it was revealed that Kubrick had hidden some subliminal audio messages within the movie.

In The Shining's first 48 minutes, numerous times a faint chant can be heard as pivotal pieces of dialogue are spoken, and that voice has been interpreted by fans as chanting the word, "Shone."

This is clearly referring to the "shine" - aka the telepathic abilities possessed by some characters in the movie - and adds yet another supremely creepy layer to a film already dripping with mood and atmosphere.

And even if you're skeptical, consider that Kubrick let nothing end up in his movies by accident. This isn't some coincidental environmental sound effect: it's clearly a post-processed voice, and a damn eerie one at that.

Though it's easily missed by the uninitiated, once you're aware, you won't ever watch the film quite the same way again.
