Rudeness is an act of defense, as well as the expression of fear - and the fact that this quote is spoken by the most admirable character in The Grand Budapest Hotel makes anyone watching wanting to emulate his success immediately. Monsieur Gustave speaks these words with great sincerity, perhaps leading audience members to walk away feeling like being polite to strangers, having impeccable manners and advising those with less are traits will eventually prove to have their rewards. We should all be inspired on a daily basis to want to be better people, in order to make the world a nicer place; Gustave is an icon for this type of positive behaviour. You might even say he's a role model for it.
