10 Intense Horror Movies You (Probably) Haven't Seen

8. The Endless (2017)

The Sadness
Snowfort Pictures

The indie horror The Endless brings together cults, time loops and otherworldly beings for a pressure-building few days in the forest.

Filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead star as brothers (and otherworldly versions of themselves), Justin and Aaron Smith, who receive an ominous video tape and decide to return to Camp Arcadia, the backwoods UFO death cult they fled years earlier. But the cult members do not seem to have aged at all in the intervening years, and a malevolent presence surrounds everything they do.

Events only get stranger from there, as the brothers encounter double moons rising in the sky, tug-of-wars with a rope tethered to the darkness itself, and a hallucinogenic red drug, cultivated from plants that grow in the forest, which the cult call "The Endless". Time distorts in unexpected and chilling ways, and the forest closes in on them, building events to fever pitch as the "ascension" approaches.

An extension of the world established in their self-contained, super low budget ($20,000) horror flick Resolution (2012), the film capitalises on its weird credentials in every way possible, making for a largely bloodless yet profoundly intense and unnerving horror. You may never have heard the names Benson and Moorhead before, but if there's one good reason to change that, it's The Endless.
