10 Intense Movies That Captivated The Hell Out Of You
3. Children Of Men
Based on P.D. James' far less action-orientated novel of the same name, Children of Men is set in a plausible future where women have lost the ability to get pregnant, and an immigrant-fearing, dystopian version of Britain has closed its borders as the rest of the world falls into decay. Not the sort of place you'd want to live, for sure.
The plot concerns Clive Owen's depressed civil servant, Theo Faron, who - at the request of his former girlfriend - finds himself caught up in a dangerous mission to escort a young girl named Kee to the coast. Kee, it turns out, might hold the answer to the world's salvation, and Theo has no choice but to help her.
Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, Children of Men is undoubtably one of the most intensely captivating thrillers ever put to screen. As we follow Theo in his quest, Cuaron and Lubezki render what is arguably cinema's most believable dystopia in a series of long, unbroken takes, transporting audiences right in the film. You don't as much watch this film as live through it.
The result is an intoxicating work of futurism, yet to been bettered, made emotionally resonant by a cast of characters you genuinely care about and stakes that are enhanced by the almost documentary-like nature of the cinematography.
