10 Intense Recent Movie Scenes You Couldn't Watch
1. The Birthing Cycle - Men
For the majority of its runtime, Alex Garland's Men is an unsettling horror film but certainly not one likely to make you lose your lunch.
The story focuses on recently bereaved protagonist Harper (Jessie Buckley), who has her quiet cottage getaway interrupted by the presence of locals who all appear to resemble the same man (Rory Kinnear).
But at film's end, things take a sharp, disgusting turn, when Harper is confronted by the naked man who's been repeatedly stalking her, now bearing a resemblance to the folkloric figure the Green Man, fittingly representing rebirth. Why fitting? You'll know why in a sec.
At this moment, the man's stomach rapidly swells and he brutally gives birth to a young boy who Harper met earlier in the story, the boy creepily wearing Kinnear's face via uncanny VFX magic.
The boy then repeats the act, giving birth to the village's pious vicar, before the vicar births Harper's plummy landlord Geoffrey, and finally, Geoffrey gives birth to Harper's dead husband James (Paapa Essiedu).
Needless to say, Garland spares few details as he pulls in tight to show each man giving birth through what appears to be a vaginal canal.
Audience reactions to the scene have varied wildly, many feeling that Garland took things too far - especially with the cyclical repetition of the birthing - while others lauded his sheer audacity.
Either way, no recent movie scene has proven quite so viscerally discomforting to sit through, especially with how it's basically prolonged to the point of black comedy.
