1. The Whisperer In Darkness
Though this list is in no way a charting from worst to best, each film selected being as good as the others, the second effort by the HPLHS is definitely one of the best adaptations of a Lovecraft tale for the cinematic medium. Again created or shot in Mythoscope so as to appear as an artefact from a by gone era, The Whisperer in Darkness perfectly evokes the sensibilities of the dawning horror and sci-fi creature features of the 1930's. Adhering to the original tale's plot structure almost completely, this adaptation is a testament to the ingenuity of the creative team. Lovecraft's tale actually ends in the second act which as a movie would be disastrous, however a third act is created which plays out most satisfactorily finishing on a twist worthy of the master himself.
