Just over thirty years after Akira Kurosawa released the film he will be remembered by, Seven Samurai€™s, he directed this extremely expensive Japanese epic which is criminally overlooked by recent audiences.

Though the film is distinctly Japanese, with the brilliant arrow breaking scene inspired by legends of Mri Motonari and his three sons, its aesthetics and were skillfully crafted into what is primarily an adaptation of King Lear. The play€™s tumultuous themes of family, honour and power fit comfortably in Kurosawa€™s traditional Japanese retelling. Also worth an honourable mention is Kurosawa€™s The Bad Sleep Well, a study of corporate corruption which was inspired by Hamlet.
