Just over thirty years after Akira Kurosawa released the film he will be remembered by, Seven Samurais, he directed this extremely expensive Japanese epic which is criminally overlooked by recent audiences.
Though the film is distinctly Japanese, with the brilliant arrow breaking scene inspired by legends of Mri Motonari and his three sons, its aesthetics and were skillfully crafted into what is primarily an adaptation of King Lear. The plays tumultuous themes of family, honour and power fit comfortably in Kurosawas traditional Japanese retelling. Also worth an honourable mention is Kurosawas The Bad Sleep Well, a study of corporate corruption which was inspired by Hamlet.
