10 James Bond Fates Worse Than Death

3. Eternal Insomnia - Gustav Graves (Die Another Day)

Sleep is, without a doubt, one of the greatest gifts known to man.

Climbing into bed after a long and stressful day, a well-deserved lie-in on a weekend, a quick nap at the desk when no one's looking - there's nothing better. Now imagine having all that taken away forever. With insomnia comes and an endless feeling of fatigue, and the desperation to sleep but it never comes. It's utterly unbearable.

This is what Gustav Graves, the villain of 2002's Die Another Day, is faced with at every moment of his existence. Granted, it's a result of gene therapy that he chose to undergo, but it's still not pleasant.

Even though Graves has access to a high-tech "dream machine", designed to counter the psychological trauma and fatigue caused by sleep deprivation, the situation would surely be far from ideal. Days, weeks and months blurring into one, with little distinction, would wreak havoc on even the most resilient of minds.

Looking at it truthfully, however, Gustav Graves is such a snivelling, arrogant, bratty tosspot of a man that it's impossible to feel any sympathy for his plight. Seeing Bond throw him into a jet turbine was too kind.
