10 Jaw-Dropping Movie Monsters We All Loved To Watch

2. The Thing - The Thing (1982)

I suppose if there was any movie monster which would come even slightly close to Brundlefly for the crown of being the most disgusting to look at, it would be The Thing from John Carpenter's 1982 movie of the same name. It's a shapeshifting alien which at first takes only socially acceptable forms, such as dogs or people. However, as the film progresses, it rather rudely decides to throw off the shackles of appearing in a way people find pleasant, and goes all upside-down-head-spider-alien on us. There are two reasons why we loved to watch the Thing, and the first is simply due to the special effects in use, as they're some of the best you can get from 1980s movies - no CGI here. The forms the alien takes are horrible to look at, yet you can't help but watch to see just how ungodly it's going to look. The second is that we never know how many of the human characters actually are human any more, leading to some truly tense scenes like Kurt Russell's blood testing session, wherein all hell breaks loose as we quickly discover just who is what. As soon as we know who the alien is, we never want it out of our sights again, because the shapes it was capable of taking are mind-blowingly sickening.
