George Romero’s 1973 original, about a biological plague that hits a Pennsylvania town, has a few bloody moments but it’s more action than horror. To the gratitude of true fans tired of watered down horror movies, this remake ain’t having none of that and cranks everything up to 11.

The first hint that something is wrong in the town of Ogden Marsh comes when Sheriff Timothy Olyphant has to shoot a local fella who’s wandered onto the baseball field carrying a shotgun and screaming blue murder. In fact, crazy stuff is happening all over town: a man burns his house down with a family locked inside, some guy starts stabbing hospital patients with a pitchfork and various others go nuts with a variety of power tools.

Playing a lawman with a pregnant wife, Olyphant makes sure his character won’t be confused with Raylan Givens by turning into a full-on badass. Pinned to the floor by a knife through his hand, Olyphant frees himself and sticks the blade through a woman’s neck, something he never got to do on Justified.

Released to theaters before The Walking Dead turned zombies into a big fat cliché, The Crazies packs more mayhem into its 90 minutes than TWD managed in some seasons.
