George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, the grandaddy of the zombie sub-genre, takes on a much greater and scarier significance when it's viewed as a piece of social commentary.
The film was released in October 1968, a time when bitter divisions over the Vietnam War were ripping American society apart and distrust of politicians and authority figures was on the rise. Martin Luther King Jr and Robert F. Kennedy, another prominent civil rights advocate, had both been assassinated a matter of months earlier.
In the movie's finale, Ben, the African-American hero of the story, is shot and killed by a gun-toting posse of white men who are out hunting down the reanimated corpses that have been feasting on the living.
Did they really mistake him for a zombie, or did they just spot an easy opportunity to murder a black man? It's up for debate, but if you think the latter, the final line spoken in this seminal film becomes deeply disturbing.
It also taps into what has become a common theme in the zombie apocalypse sub-genre: it's not the walking dead you need to worry about, it's other people.
