10 Killer Last Lines In Horror Movie History
3. "Ernest Hemingway Once Wrote..." - Seven
Seven ends with the following words from Detective William Somerset: "Ernest Hemingway once wrote, 'The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part."
There's a debate to be had over whether David Fincher's modern classic is a horror movie at all, or just a profoundly dark and disturbing psychological thriller.
What's certainly beyond doubt is the horrific nature of the film's setting and much of what happens in it, including the shocking denouement, as John Doe manipulates Detective David Mills into giving in to his anger and committing murder.
Struggling to make sense of all the misery and misanthropy surrounding him is Detective Somerset, whose world-weariness is perfectly embodied by Morgan Freeman. His delivery of the film's final line sums up his character's philosophy that, when you’re faced with life’s worst horrors, all you can do is grit your teeth and trudge on.
‘What’s in the box!?’ may be Seven’s most meme-worthy and frequently quoted line, but it’s Somerset’s final words that have the deeper impact.
