10 Knock Off Horror Movies That Are Worth Watching
4. Dog Soldiers
Knocked Off - Night of the Living Dead
In Dog Soldiers, a group of British commandos barricade themselves in an abandoned house after discovering they're being hunted by werewolves. At first, one would assume the director, Neil Marshall, looked at other films revolving around lycanthropes for inspiration like The Wolf Man or The Howling.
But according to Marshall, the biggest influence for Dog Soldiers was George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Not only does it copy the concept of a group hiding in a building that's being assaulted by supernatural creatures, the claustrophobic atmosphere and tension between the characters is very reminiscent of Romero's film. The conflict between the soldiers is cliched but the acting talents of Liam Cunningham and Sean Pertwee keep their relentless bickering engaging. Despite having a teeny budget of $2 million, the film boasts the best-looking werewolves ever since An American Werewolf in London. (And, let's be honest, no movie is ever gonna beat that one.)
Even though this action-horror flick labelled Marshall as a filmmaker to watch out for, Dog Soldiers is still his best movie to date.
