1. Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars Episodes II and III
Now we reach the number one spot and a character with all the hallmarks of an unlikeable hero played by professional whiner Hayden Christensen. Anakin Skywalker's journey to the dark side was meant to be the most compelling aspect of the prequel trilogy yet instead became a case study into the petulant adolescent tendencies of a moody teenager. He didn't face an epic struggle with temptation and the dark side he just hopped over the fence without as much as a second thought. George Lucas' writing does sometimes leave a lot to be desired but with capable actors such as Ewan McGreggor's spot on performance as a younger Obi Wan Kenobi, it shows up those who can't cope all the more. I couldn't say what inspired them to choose Christensen for the role but surely it must have become apparent fairly quickly during shooting that there was nothing likeable about his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker. There was nothing to relate to in him, very little nobility and sense of what it is to be a Jedi despite all his training. As for his romance with Natalie Portman's character, there was more playful chemistry between the original Anakin (Jake Lloyd) and Padmé (Portman) in Episode I which is all kinds of wrong. For such an important character in pop culture Darth Vader to have his origin assassinated as it was is one of the biggest crimes against cinema ever committed, it makes no sense alongside the original trilogy and removed any sympathy for the supposedly tragic character of Anakin Skywalker we may have once felt.
