10 Lame Movie Twists That Ruined Great Endings
3. He's A God. She's A God. They're Exs - Hancock
In another world, Will Smith's Hancock could have been an icon who helped reshape what the superhero film genre could look like. The first half of the film is a hilarious romp where the focus is squarely on the titular super-powered louse and his interactions with a contemptuous public and a kindhearted PR agent who tries to help change his image.
With the focus on the comedy and action, Hancock is allowed to breath and even explore themes of vigilantism and public perception. Part of the reason why was because Hancock was an original creation and his backstory was kept secret because it was largely irrelevant. But then came the third act and with it the lame twist.
Turns out Hancock is a god...thing. And the PR guy's wife is another god...thing. And she and Hancock used to be married...kinda. But their powers only work when they're apart...sorta. And in order to save her life from a fatal wound, Hancock has to leave LA and move across the country so their powers will still work. The sudden dependence on convoluted mythology that world building ruined what had been a character-driven movie and could have ended with a hilarious blow-off from a cast of over-the-top personas.
