10 Last-Minute Changes That Saved Horror Movies

5. The Aliens' Original Design Was A Bit Crap - A Quiet Place

Who would've thought Jim Halpert from The Office would co-write, star, and direct one of the most creative horrors of the decade? As surreal as it sounds, John Krasinski's A Quiet Place was an absolute triumph.

In this survival horror, aliens with acute hearing have invaded Earth, forcing the survivors to live in silence. Since the smallest sound could result in a swift death, every scene is drenched in gripping tension, long before the echo-locating extra-terrestrials appear.

But A Quiet Place mightn't have taken off the way it did if the filmmakers stuck with the creatures' original appearance. Initially, the aliens looked like a cross between a Dark Souls boss and Justice League's Steppenwolf.  Since this design wasn't very imaginative, it would've been anticlimactic when the visitors from another world finally showed up, especially after being flawlessly built up for the first hour.

During post-production, the filmmakers realised the design wasn't up to standard, urging the special effects team to revise the monsters' appearance completely. After giving them armoured-plated skin, a distorted body structure, bladed knuckles, a toothy grin, and a splitting scalp, the beasties looked like the stuff of nightmares.
