3. Edward Norton Gets His Ending (American History X)

Edward Norton is the man who would've been your MCU Incredible Hulk - for more than a solitary outing - if he'd been more compliant and a team player. Marvel's comments on needing 'an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members', speaks volumes.

In 1998, long before Norton was burning bridges with Kevin Feige, he found himself involved with Tony Kaye's American History X. The film saw Norton's Dereck Vinyard seeking redemption for his neo-Nazi ways, attempting to understand and overcome a lifetime of hate.

At a glance, it would make sense for this film to have an ending in line with Vinyard becoming a new man who had learnt from the errors of his past. Director Tony Kaye didn't see things that way and felt that after Vinyard's brother was killed he should turn his back on any hope of changing as a man and fall back into his neo-Nazi ways.

Norton rebuked this ending and felt it didn't fall in line with the narrative of the film. He rallied New Line Cinema to change the ending and before long they were in reshoots. Instead we got the tragic moment Vinyard cradles his fallen brother in his arms, as we hear said brother voice the final stanza of Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address.

He isn't always right, but in this instance you can't argue with his vision.
