What a journey it's been for The New Mutants. Filmed at the end of 2017, the movie was supposed to be released the following year before Fox's plans for reshoots resulted in its first delay. The Disney/Fox merger that followed shortly after derailed those, and Disney has since continued delaying Josh Boone's Marvel Comics adaptation.
Speculation has run rampant for months about it potentially debuting on Disney+ or Hulu, and a leaked TV spot from earlier this week seemingly confirmed that. However, during last night's Comic-Con@Home panel for The New Mutants, Disney reiterated that it will arrive in cinemas on August 28th.
Considering the fact it was predicted to flop before everything that's happening right now, it's a legit shocker that Disney seem intent on it having a big screen release. It's not like it's a movie that will result in people flocking to cinemas, and it's hard not to wonder whether the studio has to give it a theatrical run in order to then move it to its streaming service.
