Ever since the classic movie The Wizard of Oz came to cinema, there have been endless spin-offs, recreations and transformations of the 1939 fantasy film. Most of them have ranged from average to decent but the one which sticks out for all the wrong reasons is Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, which you’ve probably figured out is a sequel about Dorothy going back to Oz.

The problem is, as a follow up movie, it ignores all the original source material. The whole setting takes a leap in its time period as Kansas is made contemporary with modern civilisation and technology, even though the first movie was set in the early 20th century.

All the characters have drastically changed – Dorothy loses her childlike nature, whilst her companions back in Oz all lose their whimsical charm and instead become exaggerated caricatures of themselves.

What’s more is that they chose to have this movie produced through animation, rather than live-action, which allows for some unappealing character designs and a lack of creative world building. If that’s not enough, the story actually brings in new characters which are totally irrelevant, from the Wicked Witch’s brother The Jester, to Dorothy’s new travel companion Wiser the Owl.

It’s as if the production team had never actually seen the original Wizard of Oz and just went off a synopsis of it.
