10 Legendary Rock Songs That Were Used Perfectly In Movies
8. Exit Music (For a Film) - Radiohead
When Radiohead were beginning the production of OK Computer, they already had a few pieces to the puzzle in place. Long before the sessions had even started, the song Lucky had already been premiered as part of a relief compilation, and the beginnings of songs like Paranoid Android were starting to work themselves out as well. And though Exit Music for a Film works brilliantly in the context of the album, the melodrama of the tune was almost too perfect for Baz Lehrman's take on Shakespeare.
For all of the over the top aspects of his '90s take on Romeo and Juliet, the soundtrack was actually fairly great, having stuff like Lovefool by the Cardigans in the mix for good measure as well. As any Shakespeare aficionado will tell you though, this story does not have a happy ending, and hearing Thom Yorke's agonized wail closing things out in the credits is almost too on the nose, building from just Thom and an acoustic guitar to a glitchy soundscape that feels like the entire world is going to shatter by the time the song is over.
That's what Romeo and Juliet was always about though. This is one of the most beloved love stories of all time, and adolescent love like this often feels like the end of the world. It's also interesting to hear Thom take it in a different direction as well, framing the story as the couple packing up and running away from their lives to find someplace better. It might sound optimistic at the start, but hearing the finale of this song is like watching the end of the world unfold right from center stage.
