10 Legendary Rock Songs That Were Used Perfectly In Movies
3. Overblown - Mudhoney
There's a certain amount of irony that comes with the movie Singles blowing up. When Cameron Crowe originally pitched his romantic comedy to the higher ups, they were going to pass on it, thinking the story of a bunch of 20 somethings trying to make a name for themselves in the city of Seattle didn't have much of a future. Once the sound of grunge started to take over the airwaves though, they started to change their tune a little bit.
For any fan of the Seattle scene, the entire Singles soundtrack may be the best grunge album ever made, bringing together acts like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden under one roof while also putting a spotlight on adjacent acts like The Smashing Pumpkins and Paul Westerberg. If there's one song that summed up what the whole Seattle scene was about, Mudhoney hit the nail on the head with Overblown, taking the sound of grunge in a much more punky direction.
In the context of the movie, you can hear the band sounding a bit jaded about all the attention that Seattle is getting from the big leagues, looking to stay tied to their own scene and trying not to let things get too out of proportion. As far as the grunge ethos was concerned, this was the slacker attitude in a nutshell. Here was a band that was being featured on the soundtrack to a big budget movie, with a song that was all about how much selling out sucks.
