10 Lesser Known Horror Movies That Are 100% Worth Your Time

8. Pontypool

Unquestionably one of the most unique "zombie" films ever made, Pontypool ditches the convention of an undead plague being spread through bites and the like, instead having it transmitted through the English language itself.

Bruce McDonald's ferociously original Canadian horror sees its put-upon protagonists fighting to navigate the mere act of speaking without triggering infected words which will seal their fate.

It's a wonderfully abstract setup for a zombie movie, and one which McDonald cleverly continues to build upon throughout Pontypool's 96-minute runtime, all while nimbly working within considerable budgetary constraints.

Veteran character actor Stephen McHattie is meanwhile terrific in the lead role of shock jock Grant Mazzy, and while the headier elements of its premise surely prevented it from ever catching on with the mainstream, it's a film that's even skirted the attention of card-carrying genre fans.

McDonald has been developing a sequel, Pontypool Changes, ever since the original came out in 2008, though at this point it's probably safe to say that it's never happening. Boo.
