Amidst the slew of dross that is some of the marquee releases this year, it seems that 2017 is going to be sneaky good when it comes to animated movies; there's a lot to be excited for thanks to Coco and The Red Turtle to My Life as a Zucchini, Ferdinand and Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampire s- the best named movie of the decade, bar none.

But Spanish project Psiconautas might be the dark horse, with a serious emphasis on the dark. Based on Alberto Vazquez’s graphic novel, Psiconautas looks like it will tear apart the double helixes that make up your heart and eat it. From a trailer that is filled with macabre minimalism and panoramic vistas of desolation punctuated with organ eating avian demons and hellfyre.

Intense desolation offset with unwavering hope and a baroque dubby musical score that will singe those tiny bones found in the inner ear. It’s scathing in its commentary and it bites like an icy breeze.

A festival circuit favourite, Psiconautas is not a cartoon; it’s an animated movie.
