10 Lessons Star Wars Episode 7 Can Learn From The Prequels
4. More CGI, Anyone?
Over-reliance on CGI was a prequel pet peeve of fans and critics alike. A sense of realism was lost somewhere between Star Wars Episodes VI and I. Once upon a time, when a filmmaker wanted to put something on film, he had to actually film it. With a camera. No more. Some see an over-reliance on CGI to be lazy filmmaking. This would apply if a film uses computer generated effects as a crutch, or as a patch to cover poor storytelling. While some of the CGI used in the Star Wars prequels was beautiful, even stunning at times, it managed to uncover rather than cover the flaws of those films. Too beautiful, too perfect. It seemed to show us a universe that wasnt the Star Wars universe fans had grown fond of. While CGI is a necessary tool for telling the story of Star Wars Episode VII, it should be used as a means to establish setting and further the story, and not draw attention to itself.
