10 Lies Told In Recent Movie Trailers
3. This Is The Alien Spaceship - Nope
You have to give the marketing for Jordan Peele's Nope some credit. Though the trailers made it abundantly clear that the movie's heroes were dealing with a UFO in their midst, they were extremely careful about what they did and didn't show to potential customers.
And so, many were miffed when Nope's final trailer ended with a bright, clear image of what appears to be the UFO chasing after protagonist OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) on horseback, seemingly revealing that the alien spaceship looks exactly like the most stereotypical flying saucer UFO imaginable. Weak.
Yet while the reveal left many baffled that a money shot had been given away for free, it was in fact very deliberately chosen to throw people off.
Because as it turns out, this UFO isn't a spaceship at all - it's the alien itself, referred to as Jean Jacket throughout the movie, which typically assumes the form of a disc-like ship when flying around.
And more to the point, that's not the alien's only form - at the end it unfurls to resemble a jellyfish-like creature, which was kept entirely out of the marketing.
Granted, making the audience think they've been spoiled when they haven't - or at least, not how they think - is a bold strategy, but it mostly paid off in this case.
