There’s been a few different versions of Smasher, but this is looking particularly at the Izzy Kane version of the character. Though she’s not the original, she’s arguably got the best arc and would be the most entertaining to introduce.

She stumbles across a pair of Exospex as worn by a previous, more traditional Smasher on her farm, and decides to put them on. These give her Smasher’s powerset, and transport her to the Shi’ar Empire.

The Shi’ar are impressed by her talents, grounded personality and humble nature, so allow her to keep the Exospex and grant her honorary citizenship. Upon returning home, she discovers her grandfather fought in WWII with Captain America, so seeks him out to inform him of the funeral.

This leads to her being recruited into the Avengers, and the rest is history.

Shailene Woodley is often tarred by her uninspiring performance in Divergent, similar to Kristen Stewart with Twilight. However, just like Stewart she’s got a much more accomplished catalogue with The Descendants, Little Big Lies and The Fault In Our Stars more than showing the chops required for this plucky farm girl.
