10 Long-Awaited Movie Sequels That Will Literally Never Get Made
6. National Treasure 3
The two National Treasure movies are often dismissed as Indiana Jones-lite and never really gained a lot of traction with critics, but both the first installment and sequel Book of Secrets have a big following, spawning plenty of classic Nicolas Cage memes in the process.
Part of the charm of the franchise is that it embraces how goofy the entire premise is, and leans into the ridiculous plot mechanics with a sense of straight-face earnestness, while also doing its best to drop some educational nuggets about American history along the way.
Having earned over $800m at the box office so far, its a little surprising that we haven't seen Nicolas Cage's Benjamin Gates return for a third outing, and despite announcing that the latest draft of the script was in the works in January of this year, National Treasure 3 is still just a pipe-dream at this point.
These movies cost at least $100m to produce, and after suffering a string of high-profile flops from their live-action division since Book of Secrets was released in 2007, Disney are increasingly reluctant to invest in anything that isn't guaranteed to be a success, instead relying on the likes of Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, Disney Animation and their string of remakes to bring in the big bucks.
