1920’s The Golem was one of the pioneering films in the German Expressionist horror genre. Directed by Paul Wegener, it remains to this day as one of the original horror movies, and prints and re-releases still exist to this day.

However, The Golem movie that survived was actually the last in a trilogy of Golem films, titled The Golem: How He Came Into The World, and it was a prequel to the series. The original Golem movie was made in 1915. However, only three minutes of the movie ever survived.

The second film in the trilogy, The Golem And The Dancing Girl, is even more interesting. Evidence suggests that this movie was the first ever horror ‘spoof’, arriving way before films such as Young Frankenstein popularised it. The story was to be a meta take on the series, with actor Paul Wegener dressing as the Golem to frighten guests at a party, where he meets the titular dancing girl.

However, nothing remains of this movie at all. There are reports that a print exists in an ‘Eastern European film archive’ but that is unconfirmed. What is confirmed is that only two stills and a single poster remains.
