10 Major Concerns About Upcoming Movies
5. It Risks Jumping The Shark - F9
The sheer fact that a ninth Fast and the Furious film exists is inexplicable enough, with the series finding phenomenal mainstream success by ditching its street racer origins and transitioning to the heist/spy genre.
F9 certainly seems primed to be the most ridiculous entry into the franchise yet - which is really saying something - though one does have to consider whether the film will reach a tipping point for the series, where it's just too silly for its own good.
After all, this is a movie where Han (Sung Kang) will be somehow brought back from the dead, and according to Michelle Rodriguez it will also take the Family to space for the first time. Yup.
Will the inevitably absurd explanation for Han's return simply prove too much? And will mainstream audiences start to turn off when the series rockets its way into unabashed sci-fi territory?
Then again, in a period of human history where audiences are craving escapism from daily life more than ever, perhaps this brand of big-budget lunacy is exactly what the doctor ordered. Time will tell.
