10 Marvel Comic Storylines That Need To Be Put On Film
4. The Surtur Saga
The announcement has now come that the third Thor movie will be titled Thor: Ragnarok. There are two stories this could be an adaptation of. One is the Ragnarok story that happened a few years back and saw the seeming death of Thor and the rest of the Asgardians. In that story, Thor was trying to stop the Ragnarok cycle, a perpetual series of events that saw the Asgardians born, killed in apocalyptic battle, and then resurrected anew with no memory of the previous iteration. The Ragnarok cycle gives sustenance to the mysterious beings known as Those Who Sit Above In Shadow. The other Ragnarok storyline came in the form of the Surtur Saga in Walt Simonsons character-defining run on the Thor comics. In this story, Surtur, the lord of the fire giants, forges the sword Twilight. Prophecies state that when Surtur bathes Twilight in the eternal flame of Asgard that the Nine Realms will burn and Ragnarok will begin. The Surtur Saga is one of the most epic storylines in the history of comics, and also featured Loki, Thor, and Odin putting aside their differences and joining forces to stop the threat of Surtur. It had a great build-up, with Surtur unleashing villains on Thor in order to weaken him, such as Malekith, Lorelei, and Fafnir the dragon (and weve already seen both Malekith and Lorelei in the MCU). With Loki impersonating Odin on the throne of Asgard at the end of The Dark World, they could also work in elements from another story that saw Surtur attack Asgard while Loki was ruling. This could mean an epic return for Odin at the conclusion of the movie to engage in epic battle with Surtur. Both the Ragnarok story and The Surtur Saga are great tales and hopefully one (or aspects of both) will end up forming the plot of Thor: Ragnarok.
