10 Marvel Movie Elements That No Longer Matter

4. Post-Credits Scenes

The post-credits scene is one of the MCU's signatures, beginning with the early Phase One movies, where the whole Avengers set-up was first teased progressively, and of course, The Avengers movie itself concluded by introducing Thanos. Since then, though, the post-credits scenes have become either scattershot and predictable: Iron Man 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy touted relatively throwaway gags, while Thor: The Dark World and Age of Ultron had fairly airless stating-the-obvious teasers for what's coming. In fact, only really Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Ant-Man even remotely felt like they were truly moving things forward. Even in the instances of The Winter Soldier introducing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and Ant-Man setting up Civil War, though, these weren't particularly surprising or especially necessary, compared to say the more important Phase One stingers, which emphasised the upcoming Avengers team-up again and again, and the sight of Thor's hammer naturally helped people know at least something about who the guy is before his movie came out. Considering that the core Avengers line-up is so iconic these days, the post-credits scenes appear to have mostly lost their luster: one gets the impression Marvel Studios now considers them mandatory and therefore struggles to find much fresh or truly surprising to populate them with. They're fun and all, but are struggling to justify spending 8 minutes of your life sat in a dark cinema waiting for them.
