10 Massive Movie Franchises With No Interesting Characters

3. Mission: Impossible

Now, there's no denying that the last three Mission: Impossible movies have been nothing short of incredible, and it may very well be the best and most purely enjoyable franchise in the business at the moment, but it also has to be said that the espionage blockbusters have never been big on handing out roles that actors can really sink their teeth into.

Tom Cruise may have been playing Ethan Hunt for almost a quarter of a century, but he's still more of a cipher than a character, with his entire existence only serving to drive the plot forward without giving us a glimpse at the man behind the dogged and death-defying operative.

The ensemble may have settled down a bit, but Simon Pegg's Benji is still the tech guy and nothing else, and we only know that Ving Rhames' Luther goes way back with Ethan because we first saw him in 1996. Over the years, the likes of Jonathan Rhys Myers, Maggie Q, Laurence Fishburne, Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner have all been a part of the team, and yet audiences weren't exactly throwing a tantrum when they ended up being left on the sidelines.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
