Star Wars: The Force Awakens was one of 2015's big critical hits, scoring an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 8.2/10 average. Though there's been a lot of discussion about Rogue One's extensive reshoots, what's been shown off so far looks terrific, even if Disney are apparently not super-pleased about the movie's harsher tone.

Regardless of how it actually fares with critics, though, there's a lot of potential for Rogue One to be the movie a lot of fans wanted The Force Awakens to be, a bold love letter to and subversion of the Star Wars mythology that takes risks and doesn't just rehash legacy plots to milk audience nostalgia.

Sure, there's going to be plenty of fan service with Darth Vader's presence already confirmed, but if a director as singular as Gareth Edwards merely makes an easily-digestible studio product much like The Force Awakens (good though it was), it'd be pretty surprising.
