10 Massive Movie Predictions For The Rest Of 2016

4. Pete's Dragon & Ben-Hur Are Summer's Biggest Bombs

2016 has already boasted a number of big-budget, high-profile flops, specifically Gods of Egypt, The Huntsman: Winter's War and Alice Through the Looking Glass, and it ain't done yet!

The easy prospects for flopping for the rest of the year are both released at the beginning of August: Pete's Dragon and Ben-Hur. Pete Dragon is a live-action remake of a modestly successful 1977 animated film, but is severely lacking in A-list talent (aside from Robert Redford in a supporting role) and horribly marketed, with the film's first full trailer only dropping in June. In short, people just don't know about the film's existence, which given its evidently large price tag, is a recipe for disaster.

Then there's Ben-Hur, which "re-imagines" an iconic story despite the fact that nobody asked for it, especially considering how well the 1959 film has aged. This one has so much else working against it, too: the trailers make it look terrible, an actor of moderate-at-best popularity was cast as the lead (Jack Huston), and Morgan Freeman looks like he's yet again hamming it up in a supporting role for that easy, easy money.

Swords-and-sandals fare tends to be pretty inconsistent at the box office, and it's hard to imagine this one clawing back its undisclosed but assuredly large price tag.
