9. NOT Taking Nick Fury's Eye Loss Seriously - Captain Marvel
What Should've Happened
It was widely expected that Captain Marvel, being a 90s-set MCU prequel, would detail the reason for Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) losing an eye.
And considering that Fury explained in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that it occurred "the last time [he] trusted someone", expectations were high for that marquee moment to be realised on screen.
The common speculation among fans was that Fury would lose the eye after being tricked by the Skrulls, with one of the (seemingly) malevolent aliens disguising themselves as an ally, perhaps even Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) herself, before attacking him.
It probably would've turned out fairly predictable, but as certain aspects of Avengers: Endgame's finale just proved - predictability doesn't have to be unsatisfying.
What Actually Happened
Fans were left collectively flummoxed when it turned out that Fury lost an eye to Goose, Carol's cat - or rather, the alien creature known as a Flerken - which scratched him across the face and gave him a brutal ocular injury.
At first it seemed like fans were being toyed with and Fury hadn't actually lost his sight, given how unfussed he seemed about the incident, but by film's end he does indeed lose his entire vision in one eye.
Given the severity of losing an eye, the film doesn't really fire it home with any sense of gravity or import whatsoever, counter to most fans expecting, rather understandably, that it would have a weightier pay-off.
The cat itself isn't the problem, because it's not really a cat at all, but was Fury's injury really something worth making a joke about?
You can argue that Fury keeping the nature of his injury vague to everyone around him only further reinforces his deceptive nature - albeit usually to heroic ends - but the actual impact of the injury itself is almost completely lost amid the attempt to subvert expectations and raise a laugh.
