Long before the excellent Tony Leung made just about everyone in cinemas around the globe sit up in their seats with his gripping work as the deeply complex Xu Wenwu (a.k.a The Mandarin), another rather respected big screen thespian left a decent amount of those very same audience members crumpling their popcorn in their fists.

After being billed as a terrorist adversary to Tony Stark's Iron Man capable of completely tearing apart both his life and the world around him in Shane Black's Iron Man 3, Sir Ben Kingsley's version of said Mandarin was somewhat hilariously revealed to be nothing more than an actor who'd been brought on board to masquerade as the ruthless Ten Rings leader.

Cue outrage from some corners of the MCU fanbase at being successfully hoodwinked, with Kingsley's eventual return as Trevor Slattery in Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also going down like a cup of cold sick for some who wanted to forget about the whole bait and switch ordeal.

Few can argue with the call to switch up the character and the stellar work ultimately brought into existence by Leung; a performance that wouldn't have been possible if not for the Slattery switcheroo. However, the grafting thespian's MCU work to date understandably isn't for everyone, so you'd be forgiven for still not flying the flag for this frequently unexpected slice of Marvel comedic relief.
