10 MCU Moments Better Than Their Comic Origin
2. Bucky Remembers Who He Is
Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier is one of the more tortured individuals in the collection of Marvel characters due to his unwilling participation in the assassination of a large number of innocent souls across the second half of the 20th Century. This is worsened by the brainwashing and subsequent memory erasion at the hands of a Soviet faction and Hydra in the comics and movies respectively.
Fortunately, in both instances, he regains his memory (albeit with high levels of difficulty) after several encounters with his best friend/former teammate, Steve Rogers/Captain America. These encounters are thrilling and revolve around incredible fisticuffs and shootouts, but at the core of the clashes is an emotional journey of a man attempting to reach out to his best friend and saving him from his captors and cruel deeds.
What elevates the MCU iteration of this story over its comic counterpart is the larger conspiracy story being a backdrop rather than the focus, giving the Steve-Bucky friendship room to breathe, be explored and ultimately have a stronger emotional conclusion as Bucky gradually regains his memories and humanity.
