10 MCU Moments That Don't Quite Fit
6. "We Have Orders." - The Avengers
This scene comes from Joss Whedon's The Avengers. Everything we learn about Captain America up to and after this scene suggests that he will always prioritize his moral compass, even if it means disobeying an order. In some instances it feels as though in scenes with both Captain America and Tony Stark, Cap gets a little lamer and more conservative, mainly to juxtapose Stark.
After the two smartest people in the room (Stark and Bruce Banner) explain to Cap that SHIELD is hiding something regarding Loki and the tesseract, Cap dismisses their valid (and correct) concerns with a generic "We have orders. We should follow them." Rather than sound like something Captain America would say in the moment, it feels as though the writers wanted to pitch a softball to Tony Stark just to set up his comeback, "I'm not the following type".
The dialogue choice isn't offensive, nor does it warrant a major eye roll. It just doesn't quite fit. So, Captain America de-frosts after 70 years only to blindly follow orders from an organization he know longer knows, rather than give credence to a potentially disastrous issue brought forth by two super-geniuses.
It's not the move of a guy known for his prowess in military tactics.
