The Offending Comic: Spider-Man and Power Pack #1 (1984)

Part of a series of free PSA (public service announcement) comics released by Marvel to warn young readers of social issues and society’s ills, Spider-Man and Power Pack dared to delve into the issue of childhood sexual abuse.

Alongside a couple of other child abuse focused plots unfolding in comic strip form, one storyline involved a young Peter Parker being groomed with girlie magazines and molested by an older friend named Skip Wescott.

Although no doubt produced by Marvel with honourable intentions, it’s still a little jarring to see such a sensitive issue dealt with in a comic. Luckily we’re pretty sure that Marvel’s PSA comics are considered non-canon and since neither Spider-Man’s childhood abuse nor his abuser Skip Wescott have ever been mentioned again, it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man tackle this sort of storyline anytime in the near future.
