Dead Man’s Chest shows the terrifying final moments of Jack Sparrow as he and his beloved Pearl are devoured by the Kraken. A heartbreaking moment, but not exactly the first time that the Pearl went down to the depths with her captain. Jack locates the treasure island of Kerma. Knowing that Beckett will enslave the inhabitants of the island once he reports back, Jack lied and proclaimed that he had never found Kerma.

This frustrated Beckett, tasking Sparrow to deliver slaves instead, but to his surprise, Jack agreed. Jack sailed the Wicked Wench with a hundred slaves aboard, although instead of doing as instructed, Jack liberated the slaves in Kerma. Beckett learned of this betrayal which caused him to punish Jack by brandishing his skin with the letter P and firing cannons at the Wicked Wench, forcing Jack to watch his beloved ship burn.

To his great grief, Jack swam to his burning ship and went down with her. With Sparrow between the world of the dead and the living, he summoned Davy Jones to strike a deal. Davy Jones is to resurrect his beloved vessel in exchange for his soul. The captain of the Flying Dutchman raised Jack’s ship from the depths, but the ship retained its blackened and burnt color, hence the name Black Pearl.
