2. The Worst Kind Of Teacher - Whiplash

Spider Man
Sony Pictures Classics

Damien Chazelle's feature-length debut is one of the most nail-biting cinematic experiences from the last decade. This is due to the director's ability to ratchet up tension when need be, the film's sharp editing and its powerhouse performances from Miles Teller and especially a never-better JK Simmons.

The latter's performance as ruthless conductor Terence Fletcher is one of the most gripping the actor has ever given, and it rightfully earned him scores of accolades including an Oscar and BAFTA. Fletcher's treatment of Andrew Neiman (Teller) is unforgivable and cruel, and his warped world-views underline the film's commentary on what success means in a high-stakes industry.

The infamous "Were you rushing or were you dragging?" scene is a crucial example of Fletcher's brutish nature and to musically gifted viewers in particular served as a showcase of how far the teacher would go to get the best out of his students regardless of the risk it could pose to their wellbeing.

In the scene, Fletcher chastises Neiman for not being on his tempo but does not indicate why that was the case. According to Reddit user 'u/djsunkid', it turns out the difference in Neiman's drumming was marginal at best and that Fletcher took that opportunity to essentially abuse the young student in his twisted attempt at building a successful artist.
