10 Mind-Numbingly Stupid Lines Of Dialogue From Man of Steel

8. Jonathan Kent says:

€œThis is not from this world Clark. And neither are you.€

Oh boy, it€™s getting worse. This line comes from the scene in which Jonathan reveals to Clark that he is actually an alien being. To be honest, this whole conversation grated at my nerves. Not to mention the entire character arc of Jonathan Kent, which was extremely absurd. His motivations for trying to hide Clark€™s abilities were a little unclear and ultimately pointless as Superman reveals them only a few years after Jonathan's death anyway. Now what makes this line of dialogue seem so forced is that it reads just like something out of a Hollywood screenplay. And that€™s cool in a tongue-in-cheek movie like The Avengers where the characters are essentially parodying each other. But this is a film made in the image of the brooding Dark Knight trilogy. Here we have a scene that we are supposed to buy as emotionally compelling, yet it oozes of camp cheese. This is essentially the biggest revelation that will occur in Clark€™s life and how does Goyer deal with it? He has Jonathan Kent completely blindside the poor kid, jumping straight into the confounding details. Kevin Costner didn€™t exactly try hard as far as performance goes either. The exchange just seemed far too superficial to care about.
