10 Mind-Numbingly Stupid Lines Of Dialogue From Man of Steel
9. Jor-El says:
I will honour the man you once were, Zod, not this monster you have become.
This line is said by Jor-El in the first scene, when Zod starts to take over Krypton. The problem with this dialogue isnt so much that its badly written on its own. It does kind of flow off the tongue. And it makes sense in the context of whats happening. But it sounds absolutely terrible in the film because Zods transformation into villain is rushed so carelessly. Lets look at the broader picture here. This dialogue occurs in the first scene of the film. The very first scene! Now Im aware that there is a lot of backstory to cover here and viewers are going to be keen to see Superman on Earth. But dear God was Zod written lazily. We never once get a glimpse of the villain as the respectable general he supposedly once was. Even worse he barges into the first scene while were only just learning of the situation on Krypton. Russell Crowe delivers the line like a poorly trained B-movie actor trying out for Shakespeare and you cant help but giggle at the ridiculousness of the whole thing. Goyers mistake here is trying to hit us emotionally in regard to a character that hasnt even had one other scene to develop in. Whatsmore, Im not entirely sure that Kryptonians would refer to each other as menlet alone speak English in the first place.
